Windows XP – two years to 'end-of-life'

Microsoft is warning all users of Windows XP and Office 2003 that all support will cease in less than two years

Microsoftie Stella Chernyak reminded everyone that in regard to Windows XP (all versions) and Office 2003 (all versions and modules), "on April 8, 2014, we will officially end support for these versions of Windows and Office."

Chernyak went on to tell us, "Today, we want to acknowledge the two-year countdown to the end of Windows XP and Office 2003 support, which was this past Sunday. If you still have some PCs running Windows XP and Office 2003 in your organization, now would be a good time to start migrating them to Windows 7 and Office 2010."

According to Statcounter (which iTWire uses to maintain statistics on our own site usage), as at the end of March this year, 46.5% of all counted hits came from Windows 7 computers (rising from 30.5% a year ago), 33.5% were Windows XP (and falling quickly from 47.3% 12 months ago), Vista fell from 13.7% to 9.1% in the same period. Mac OSX was relatively steady at a little over 7%. iOS and all others accounted for the remainder (around 3%, with iOS being close to zero 12 months ago).

Of course business users should already be contemplating (or have completed) migrations to Windows 7 and Office 2010, but this is more of an issue for home users (probably Windows XP more than Office) who tend to keep a machine for a considerably longer period of time.

Of course the alternative for these home users is to keep Windows XP running after Aril 2014, and hope that no further vulnerabilities are discovered (good luck with that!).
