Chien-Ming Wang apologizes for extra-marital affair during news conference
This is not the kind of thing I expected to sit down and write during a stopover on my way San Diego, but here goes nothing:
Chien-Ming Wang held a news conference yesterday in Florida in which he admitted to Taiwanese reporters that he had an extra-marital affair in 2010 and apologized for it.
“Two years ago I made a very serious mistake. I will not and cannot excuse myself for this mistake,” Wang said, according to translated accounts. “To my family and friends who love and support me, I will not even dare to ask for your forgiveness, but I want to express my most deep apology.”
Wang, one of Taiwan’s largest celebrities, made the announcement after Apple Daily, a Taiwanese tabloid, published photos and Wang and the woman with whom he carried on the affair. Wang said the affair went on for eight months and caused his family, which includes a 3-year-old son, great harm.
“I was feeling hopeless during the long hours of rehabilitation every day,” Wang said. “At the low ebb of my life, I had this affair.
“Because of my lack of will, I have hurt my wife, my family and this woman. There are no words to describe how deeply sorry I am to have hurt you all.”
Wang made his affair public just after making his first rehab appearance in an extended spring training start. Washington reporters who cover the team were not notified of the news conference, either before or after it took place. A Nationals spokesman did not immediately respond to a request to comment.
“Chien-Ming Wang has my full support, and the support of the Washington Nationals organization, as he and his family deal with a difficult personal situation,” General Manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement released by the team. “I appreciated Chien-Ming’s honesty in relaying the facts to me directly, and I am satisfied that he has accepted responsibility for his actions. I hope the time will not be distant when his family can put this ordeal behind them and a healthy Chien-Ming can focus on returning to the mound and to his team. We will not be commenting further on this issue.”
Wang is on the disabled with a strained hamstring, which he suffered March 15 during a spring training start.
外遇事件中，受傷最重的永遠都是配偶。團隊型職業運動的名將之妻，尤其如此。而曾經紅透半邊天的美國職棒明星賈維（Steve Garvey），婚外情曝光時在美國引起的震撼，受矚目的程度絕不下於今天的王建民。
美國學者下功夫研究球星外遇，其中一項研究歷時長達四年，訪談大量棒球、籃球、美式足球、冰上曲棍球（這是美國最熱門的四項職業運動）的選手及他們的配偶。結論之一是，「運動員之妻必須面對通姦文化」。
稱其為「文化」，因為事例甚多。儘管沒有確切數據，但不時曝光的新聞足以說明這是潛在的危機，也令配偶長年擔憂。
比起一般人，球星面臨更多的外遇誘惑。等在球場外的粉絲，難道只有一睹丰采、索取簽名、要求合影？有多少是要求「帶出場」的？而球員本身又有多少等著吃「速食麵」的？整個球季中，一半的比賽在客場，為選手提供了大量「夜不歸營」的機會。
當年賈維打過洛杉磯道奇隊及聖地牙哥教士隊，創下無數光榮史蹟，金手套、明星賽、最有價值球員等，你聽過的，他沒有不得過的，所以入選「廿世紀最偉大的百位選手」之列。加州還有所學校更改校名，以他為名。最了不起的，他有「Mr. Clean」（乾淨先生）的美譽，不但處處是正面評價，而且熱心公益，關懷弱勢。總教練拉索達說得好，「如果他要追我女兒，我讓他進了家門，立刻鎖上門，不讓他走」。
誰想到，他在退休隔年，婚外情曝光，而且一個接一個，至少有四位，其中幾位給他生了孩子。接著他又被查到鉅額欠稅。下場是妻離子散，女兒傷心之餘，拒絕與他見面，他並宣告破產（如今東山再起，主持電視節目）。
美國的研究發現一些值得深思的現象。例如球星的婚外情曝光後，不少配偶選擇逆來順受，究其原因，一旦離婚，恐怕不能再過目前優渥的生活了。進一步分析發現，配偶能不能忍下這口氣，往往要看兩人在何時結婚。如果是在丈夫成為職業運動員之前即已結婚，配偶通常不願容忍，幾經討論，常是丈夫立下切結書，保證絕不再犯，方能就此打住。
如果是在丈夫踏進職業運動界之後才結婚，尤其是在入行十年、十五年之後才結婚的，配偶多半選擇原諒。她們給自己的最好理由是：「丈夫一定有他的說詞，姑且信他吧」。
姑且信之？看似沒事，其實很多配偶備受煎熬。有的絕口不提兩人相處之事，有的時時提防夫婿出軌，有的變成神經質的找碴，總之日子很不好過。至於做丈夫的，繼續四處比賽，繼續接受女球迷獻殷勤，繼續……。真不公平。
對運動員而言，醜聞曝光，除了如何向家人交代，還要面對廣告商終止合約。高球名將老虎伍茲的性醜聞逐一曝光時，他代言的企業股價直直落，幾家加起來掉了美金五十億至一百廿億，廠家唯有終止合約以止血。有的廠家很精明，例如某著名運動鞋廠商固然沒有終止合約（這家公司這次也力挺王建民），然而在第二年把酬勞減了一半，第三年再砍一半。
現今世代充滿誘惑，抗拒的方法之一是離它們盡量遠一點。既然有家室，卻和不認識的異性流連於夜店，還刻意隱瞞自己的真實身分，其實已經讓自己開始了危險的第一步。而且一旦開始了第一個謊話，後續還不知道要撒多少謊。偏偏現今科技如此普及，人人都可以是狗仔隊，難免應了聖經所說的「掩藏的事，沒有不顯出來的；隱瞞的事，沒有不露出來的」。因此唯有防微杜漸，「連那被情慾沾染的衣服也當厭惡」。就像長輩交代的：如何不輸錢？很簡單，不上牌桌即可。
