在1984年，英國歌手看到新聞中非洲衣索比亞等地區的人民，長期處於飢荒與營養不良而死亡，提出錄製歌曲，將義賣所得援助非洲饑民的構想 (Do they know it's Christmas)，英國歌壇的此項義舉，立即引發世界迴響，美國歌唱界鼎力支持，由流行音樂天王Michael Jackson參與寫曲，由美國45位知名歌星聯合演唱，旨在聲援向非洲饑民捐款的大型慈善活動「美國援非」(USA for Africa)，當時知名度非常高的歌手都有參與這首歌曲的演唱
