1. The Empire City 帝國城市

David Stravitz first printed this name in his photographic book titled New York, Empire City: 1920-1945. It represents New York City's wealth and resources. First president George Washington saw New York as the "seat of empire".

David Stravitz是第一個在他的出版畫冊當中，將紐約叫做帝國城市的人。這個名字代表了紐約市的財富和資源。美國第一任總統喬治華盛頓更把紐約稱作「帝王之座」。

2. The Big Apple 大蘋果

Jazz musicians called New York City "the Big Apple" in the 1920s and 1930s. They got the term from a horse track worker who said where to a horserace in NYC was referred to as the Big Apple.

20年代和30年代的時候，爵士樂音樂家們稱紐約市為「大蘋果」，他們主要是從那些馬道工作者口中得知當他們在談論紐約馬賽的時候總是說紐約市大蘋果。

NYC was named this because immigrant children played stickball throughout the New York Streets in the 1930s.

5. The Melting Pot 大熔爐

The term Melting Pot was first used in publication by Israel Zangwill in his play adapted from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet titled The Melting Pot in 1908.

6. Manhattan 曼哈頓

Manhattan was the nickname used by the Algonquin Indians when the island was first settled by the Dutch in the 1620s. The name Manhattan was quickly adopted by thesettlers and today is the official name of the most famous borough.
