The GlobalFood Crisis, Mapped

Oxfam, the antihunger group, has beenrunning a campaign to call attention to the global food crisis, itsconsequences and its potential solutions. The Times outlined the challenge offuture food security on a warming planet in this article severalweeks ago, and this week my colleague Jeffrey Gettleman describedthe appalling famine unfolding inSomalia. The Somalia situation has a drought component, although the causes ofthe suffering seem to be primarily political.

The people at Oxfam justcalled my attention to a remarkable new map they have created that highlightsthe different ways that high food prices and food insecurity are playing out incountries around the world. On a computer that supports the Flash graphicsformat, as most do (iPads do not), go to this linkand click on the green box that says“Explore [Full Screen].”

Once you’ve loaded the map, you can click and drag your mouseto see any part of the world. The pop-up narratives by country are the mainfeature, but don’t miss the links at the bottom to statistics and photos aboutthe crisis.

救救我的孩子，他已經好幾天沒吃東西了」、「可以再多給我一份乾糧嗎？

我家裡還有一個四歲的妹妹在等我拿東西回去給她吃」、

「謝謝你們給的食物，雖然我走了好幾公里遠，好遠好累，但你們讓我看見一線希望」

一句句全來自東非貧困飢餓地區的災民與災童，娓娓道出心中急需大家幫助的話。 

當我們的孩子偏食只挑選自己愛吃的食物時，

地球的另一端東非地區，卻有超過兩百萬名五歲以下的貧童，

因為乾旱、糧荒而面臨營養不良、飢餓的危機，更有超過五十萬名兒童隨時可能因為飢餓而死亡。

秉持哪裡有需要、家扶就在哪裡的使命，

家扶基金會發起「東非之角-愛的援助」（Horn of Africa-love）

搶救東非飢餓兒童的募款活動，期盼匯集眾人之愛，

幫助這些飢餓的東非貧困孩子補充他們的糧食和營養，

改善他們的衛生和健康，讓東非貧童能有存活下去的勇氣與希望。
